Museum of gramophones and phonographs

The Museum of Gramophones and Phonographs is a sound recording collection in Saint Petersburg with three exhibition halls. Here you can see gramophones, phonographs, and records from America, France, Germany, and Russia, showing how music and voices were captured and played back across different periods.

Founder Vladimir Deryabin began the collection after buying his first gramophone while working on a circus production in Krasnodar. The museum opened in 1997 and now documents how sound recording technology evolved from early phonographs onward.

The collection displays devices that belonged to celebrated Russian artists and writers like Tolstoy and Stanislavski, revealing how sound recordings fit into their daily lives. These personal items connect visitors to the cultural world of another era.

Visits conclude in the final hall where tea and sweets are served at a large table, providing a comfortable end to the tour. This gives you time to rest and reflect on what you have seen before leaving.

The museum holds one of the world's largest collections of these devices, with many restored pieces featuring ornate decorations and stained-glass elements. This artistic beauty reveals how sound devices were valued not just as technology but also as decorative objects for wealthy homes.
