Saint Mary's Lutheran Church is a temple featuring a dome on a high drum and a columned portico designed in Russian classical style. The building sits in the city center surrounded by quieter streets, allowing visitors to appreciate its architectural proportions.

The church was founded in 1734 under Empress Anna Ioanovna and received its stone structure in 1805 from architect Gottlieb Paulsen's design. This continuity reflects the importance of the Protestant community in the city across generations.

The church functions today as the cathedral of the Church of Ingria, a role that many visitors do not realize. Following extensive renovation work in the 1990s with support from Finnish parishioners, it regained much of its original character.
