House of Lidval, Art Nouveau residential building on Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt, Saint Petersburg, Russia
The House of Lidval is an Art Nouveau residential building on Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt in Saint Petersburg with five floors and an asymmetrical layout. The facade features textured cream-colored plaster, red granite accents, and carved animal decorations.
The building was constructed between 1900 and 1904 and served as the home of architect Fyodor Lidval and his mother. They left Russia in 1918 as the country underwent radical political transformation.
The northern section displays tilework and wood paneling that reflect the artistic tastes of its early 1900s residents. These elements show how people chose to surround themselves with fine craftsmanship in their private spaces.
The building still functions as a residential property at the corner of Malaia Posadskaia Street and Kronverkski Prospekt in this neighborhood. Visitors can view the exterior and architectural details from the street level in front of the building.
The building introduced an open courtyard design to Saint Petersburg's residential architecture that became influential for later construction. This layout approach set new standards for how urban apartment buildings could be arranged and used.
