Sirius, Federal territory in Krasnodar Krai, Russia
Sirius is a federal territory on the Russian Black Sea coast, extending between the Mzymta and Psou rivers and bordering the Georgian region of Abkhazia. The settlement sits in the Imereti Lowlands, a flat coastal zone interspersed with parks, sports venues, and modern building complexes.
The territory was created in 2019 from parts of Sochi's Adlersky District that had been developed for the 2014 Winter Olympics. A year later, it received federal territory status through special legislation, an administrative form previously unknown in Russia.
The settlement takes its name from the brightest star in the night sky, reflecting ambitions for scientific excellence. Schools and research facilities define the streetscape, where young talent from across the country gathers to work on technical and scientific projects.
Three railway stations named Imeretinsky Kurort, Olimpiyskaya Derevnya, and Vesyoloye connect the area to Sochi and onward destinations. Visitors reach most facilities on foot or with local buses, as the territory is compactly built.
The area became the first Russian administrative unit to be declared a federal territory in December 2020, a category that had not existed before. This status grants the place greater legal and financial independence compared to other regions of the country.
