Fisht Olympic Stadium, Olympic Stadium in Sochi, Russia.
Fisht Olympic Stadium sits between the Black Sea coast and the Caucasus range and features a semi-transparent polycarbonate roof that lets daylight through. The stands surround the pitch in an oval shape and offer room for tens of thousands of spectators.
Construction began in 2009 and was complete three years later for the Winter Olympics opening ceremony. After 2016 the roof was removed to transform the venue into an open arena for football matches.
The name comes from a mountain in the western Caucasus whose shape inspired the roof construction. Visitors today recognize the connection between the curved silhouette of this venue and the peaks in the distance.
The venue holds around 25,000 spectators and sits in the Olympic Park near the coast. Regular buses and suburban trains connect the site with central Sochi and the surrounding neighborhoods.
The roof was originally built fully enclosed but later reopened for football matches. This technical adjustment allowed the structure to serve a new purpose without tearing down the entire building.
