Sengileevskie Mountains National Park is a national park in Ulyanovsk Oblast, in the European part of Russia, covering a forest-steppe landscape of limestone hills and deep ravines along the Volga River. The territory borders the Kuybyshev Reservoir and contains several distinct forest types adapted to the semi-arid conditions of the region.
The area was officially designated as a national park in 2017, making it one of the newer protected territories in the Volga region. Before that, parts of the land had been used for farming and were covered by lighter forms of environmental protection.
The limestone hills and chalk outcrops have long served as landmarks for people living along this stretch of the Volga. Visitors walking the trails today can observe plant communities that grow nowhere else in the surrounding region, drawing naturalists from across Russia.
The park is most easily reached from the town of Sengiley, which sits close to the main entrance area. Trails cross uneven terrain with limestone slopes and ravines, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before setting out.
Along the shores of the Kuybyshev Reservoir, chalk outcrops that were exposed when the reservoir was filled in the 1950s now host rare plant species that could not survive in surrounding soils. The flooding that created the reservoir accidentally produced a new habitat that benefits plants normally found much farther south.
