Gyllene Cirkeln, Jazzclub in Stockholm
Gyllene Cirkeln was a jazz club located in ABF-huset on Sveavägen in Stockholm, beginning as a restaurant before becoming a thriving music venue. The club was small enough that everyone could enjoy performances up close and was known for its good sound and comfortable space.
The club opened in April 1962 and operated as a pure jazz venue until February 1967, then continued as a discotheque until 1969. During this period, many American jazz musicians moved to Stockholm, finding a welcoming audience and a vibrant jazz environment in the city.
The name Gyllene Cirkeln means Golden Circle in Swedish, referring to its circular stage setup that made performances intimate. Visitors shared their passion for jazz in a warm, welcoming space where the connection between musicians and audience felt close and genuine.
The club was located in ABF-huset on Sveavägen in an easy-to-find spot where visitors immediately felt the energy of the music scene. The tight layout of the space meant that every guest had a good view of the stage regardless of where they sat.
The club hosted recordings with major names like Ornette Coleman, Bill Evans, and Coleman Hawkins, with many of these recordings remaining rare and hard to find today. A book documenting its history includes a special CD featuring captures from legendary performances, making these rare moments accessible to the public.
