Marinstaden, Residential district in Nacka, Sweden
Marinstaden is a residential district with floating homes built on concrete platforms in Svindersviken bay, south of Stockholm. The apartments range from 35 to 70 square meters and connect to standard municipal utilities.
The district was developed starting in 1999 on a former harbor area once known as 'the bay of dead ships' due to abandoned vessels. This transformation turned a neglected waterfront into a sought-after residential community.
The floating homes define a distinctive way of living where residents experience daily life directly connected to the water and its rhythms. This lifestyle merges maritime heritage with modern comfort in an urban setting.
Visitors can explore the district on foot and view the homes from exterior walkways, with most areas easily accessible. The warmer months offer the best experience, when the surroundings feel more lively and the water more inviting.
The homes were prefabricated in Estonia and then transported by barge to Stockholm, an unusual construction approach for residential development. This manufacturing method allowed the units to be built faster and more efficiently than traditional building practices.
