Vårdhemmet Högalid, Healthcare institution in Södermalm, Stockholm, Sweden.
Vårdhemmet Högalid was a large facility in Södermalm with two main buildings containing sleeping quarters, sick wards, and staff housing. The complex at Maria Bangata was a self-contained place where many people lived and worked together.
The facility was built between 1902 and 1905 as a workhouse for poor people. It received its current name in 1926 after renovations and eventually closed in 1971 following scandals in the 1960s.
The facility was also a place where residents could work and produce items needed by the city, giving many people a sense of routine and purpose. This production was integral to how the institution functioned on a daily basis.
The site was located at Maria Bangata in southern Stockholm and was easily accessible by public transport. Since the place no longer exists today, visitors can only see the new residential buildings that occupy the original site.
The facility played an important role in running the city, as brooms made there were used for street cleaning in Stockholm. This practical connection between the facility and daily city life made it more than just a social service.
