Changi Naval Base, Naval base located at the eastern end of Singapore
Changi Naval Base is a large military port on Singapore's eastern coast, built on land reclaimed from the sea and covering about 86 hectares. The facility features a berthing area over 6 kilometers long, multiple docks, warehouses, and modern infrastructure to maintain and operate various types of vessels including submarines, frigates, and missile boats.
The base was built in 2004 and officially opened by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong at that time. Since its opening, it has developed into a key strategic naval facility that plays an important role in regional security and regularly welcomes visiting ships from allied nations including the United States, Russia, and India.
The base is where sailors and officers follow routines passed down through generations, maintaining a strong sense of purpose and tradition. Visitors can observe how personnel take personal care of their ships, cleaning and inspecting every part to ensure readiness.
The base is heavily secured for safety reasons and access to main areas requires special permission. However, visitors can view and sometimes board ships during public events held every two years or during the IMDEX Asia exhibition, which showcase naval vessels and offer demonstrations.
The base uses innovative technologies including small wind turbines and solar panels to generate power, and cools its systems using seawater to conserve fresh water. These environmental solutions make it one of the most modern and sustainable naval facilities in the region.
