Emerald Hill, Singapore, Protected neighborhood near Orchard Road, Singapore.
Emerald Hill is a protected neighborhood near Orchard Road featuring traditional shophouses from the Straits Chinese period. These multi-story buildings display Chinese-Baroque architectural elements with decorated facades, carved ornaments, and symmetrical layouts arranged along gently sloping streets.
The area began as a nutmeg plantation owned by William Cuppage in the 1800s, then transformed into residential lots after Chinese immigrants arrived. The neighborhood took its present form in the early 1900s as Peranakan families built and occupied the shophouses.
Today the neighborhood attracts artists, designers, and young professionals who settle in the restored shophouses. Ground-floor galleries and studios showcase contemporary creativity while upper floors remain residential spaces.
The area is easy to explore on foot and Somerset MRT provides direct access to the streets and galleries. Many shops, restaurants, and cafes occupy the restored ground floors, though the steep sidewalks require sturdy walking shoes.
About 59 houses date from the early 1900s and preserve specialized architectural features from the Straits Chinese period. The decorations on doors, windows, and roofs show individual craftsmanship that varies from house to house.
