Loulon

Loulon is a Byzantine fortification built on a rocky hilltop between Canakci and Gedelli villages in Hasangazi. The site preserves fortress walls, barracks structures, and ancient water storage facilities that reveal its military purpose.

From the 8th to 9th centuries, this fortress marked the border between the Byzantine Empire and the Arab Caliphate, changing hands repeatedly. Its strategic location made it a contested frontier post between the two powers.

The fortress blends Byzantine and Islamic architectural styles, showing how different civilizations shaped this strategic military post over time. The buildings reflect the various cultures that ruled here one after another.

The site sits on a high, rocky hilltop and requires sturdy footwear with good grip for exploring the structures safely. Visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and allow enough time to walk across the area.

A beacon system connected this fortress to Constantinople, allowing rapid communication across Byzantine territory. This messaging network was a remarkable technical achievement of its era.
