Tyana, Archaeological site in Bor, Turkey.
Tyana is an ancient site near Kemerhisar in Turkey where stone foundations of temples, public buildings and homes lie scattered across a broad field. The remains trace a street grid, and in some places column fragments and carved stone blocks stand out.
The settlement began as a Hittite city called Tuwanuwa and later became a Roman colony under Emperor Caracalla. Afterward it served as capital of the province Cappadocia Secunda.
The site once connected trade routes passing through Cappadocia and served traveling merchants as a stop between larger cities in the region. Today some finds show that craftsmen produced pottery and metalwork here that were traded in nearby settlements.
Visitors reach the site by taking a minibus from Niğde to Bor and then continue briefly to Kemerhisar. The terrain is open and flat, so guests can walk among the foundations.
Excavations uncovered parts of a Roman aqueduct with water channels running through several levels of the complex. Archaeologists also found inscriptions pointing to a cult of the Anatolian deity Men.
