St Symeon, Archaeological site in Antakya, Turkey

St Symeon is an archaeological site of an early Christian monastery near Antakya with preserved structures from different periods. A visitor center and viewing terrace help guests explore the remains and look out over the Sammandag region.

The site emerged in early Christian times as an important sanctuary and was used for centuries before a major earthquake in 1017 destroyed the complex. This collapse marked the end of a long period of religious activity at this location.

This was an important pilgrimage destination in early Christian times, drawing believers who came to honor the sacred site. The buildings show how religious community life unfolded here, something visitors would have witnessed across the centuries.

The site can be reached via a paved access road and has public restrooms and security staff on hand. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore the different areas.

Three separate monasteries existed side by side at this location, forming a single religious community together. A large mill on the grounds supplied the residents and shows the economic complexity of this early Christian settlement.
