Fort Santo Domingo, Spanish colonial fort in Tamsui, Taiwan
The red brick fortress stands on a hill overlooking the Tamsui River, with thick defensive walls and large arched windows throughout its structure.
The Spanish constructed a wooden fort in 1628, which the Dutch later rebuilt in stone in 1644, naming it Fort Antonio before British authorities transformed it into a consulate.
The fort received its local name, Hong Mao Cheng, from Taiwanese residents who called the Dutch settlers red-haired people during the colonial period.
Visitors can reach the fort by taking the Taipei Metro Red Line to Tamsui Station and then walking 20 minutes along the riverside path.
The fortress contains the oldest remaining building in northern Taiwan and features the last standing gate from the original Qing Dynasty stone wall construction of 1724.
