The building began as a tea storage facility and was later converted by Shell Oil into large oil storage with tanks. It suffered severe damage from bombing in 1944 but recovered and now serves cultural purposes.
The building reflects how foreign trade and local commerce shaped this port area, visible in its architecture and the way spaces were adapted over time. The structure shows how a single place served different communities across different eras.
The site is open Tuesday through Sunday with free entry for all visitors. Its location next to the MRT station makes it easy to reach, and guided tours can be arranged upon request.
The structure burned uncontrollably for three days after bombing, demonstrating the massive construction and its fire resistance. This history turned the site into a symbol of resilience for this port area.
