St. Aldhelm's Chapel, St. Aldhelm's Head, Norman chapel in Worth Matravers, England
The square stone chapel features a central column that divides the interior space and stands 108 meters above sea level near coastal cliffs.
Built in 1150, the chapel received regular payments for a chaplain during King Henry III's reign and underwent major restoration work in the 19th century.
Archaeological excavations in 1957 revealed a monumental slab with Celtic-style cross carvings and grave remnants from the late 13th century near the chapel.
The Worth Matravers Parochial Church Council manages the Grade I listed building, which remains accessible for religious services and historical exploration.
The structure's orientation aligns with cardinal points instead of the traditional east-west arrangement, suggesting its potential dual purpose as a coastal watchtower.
