HMS Thetis, Submarine in the United Kingdom
HMS Thetis was a T-class submarine built for the Royal Navy in the 1930s. The vessel was designed for underwater combat operations and equipped with advanced weapons and navigation systems of that era.
The submarine sank on 1 June 1939 during sea trials, killing 99 crew members. The wreck was later raised, repaired, and returned to service as HMS Thunderbolt.
The disaster resulted in significant changes in submarine escape procedures.
The wreck lies on the seabed and is accessible to divers familiar with challenging underwater conditions. Local knowledge of tidal currents and weather patterns is important for a safe visit.
The vessel is notable for having served under two different names—HMS Thetis and later HMS Thunderbolt. This name change was unusual for British warships and makes the wreck particularly interesting to historians today.
