W. H. Bramble Airport, airport
W. H. Bramble Airport is a former airport on Montserrat originally built in 1956 as Blackburne Airport with a small runway of earth and stone. The facility was later expanded with a new asphalt runway and served for decades as the main transportation hub for regional flights to neighboring islands including Antigua and Saint Kitts.
The airport opened in 1956 as Blackburne Airport and was destroyed in 1997 by the eruption of Soufrière Hills volcano, resulting in complete evacuation and closure. After years of inactivity, a smaller replacement airport named John A. Osborne Airport opened in 2005 to restore air transportation connections to the island.
The airport served for decades as a vital arrival point for visitors and represented the island's connection to neighboring territories. Its role in bringing people together made it a symbol of accessibility for the local community during its operational years.
The remains of the airfield are accessible today via local roads and can be visited as part of exploring the island's history. Visitors should note that the site is non-operational and natural conditions like overgrown vegetation and weather should be considered when planning a visit.
Scientists monitored Soufrière Hills volcano from this airport using cameras to document lava and ash movements, providing critical data for understanding the eruption. These observations helped scientists better understand and predict the speed and extent of volcanic activity on the island.
