Lizard Lighthouse, Historical lighthouse in Lizard Point, England.
Lizard Lighthouse is a white octagonal structure standing 19 meters tall on the cliffs, with the east tower still sending navigation signals across the water. It continues to emit light flashes every three seconds that can be seen from far across the ocean.
Trinity House took control of the lighthouse in 1771, marking the shift from private ownership to professional maritime management. The west tower operated until 1903, after which operations continued with only the east tower.
The visitor centre displays maritime equipment and shows how navigation methods evolved over time, helping you understand the role these lighthouses played in protecting ships at sea.
Wear sturdy shoes as the cliff paths are rough and often windy around this location. The warmer months offer better visiting conditions with easier access and more pleasant weather.
The structure was originally built with two towers, a design that helped ships identify this location and determine their exact position along the coast. This twin-tower arrangement provided a distinctive navigation marker that was easier for vessels to recognize at sea.
