Aonach Meadhoin, Mountain summit in Highland, Scotland

Aonach Meadhoin is a mountain in the Scottish Highlands reaching about 1000 meters with steep slopes dropping into the corries of Coire nan Eun and Coire na Cadha. The terrain shows typical alpine features with sharp ridges and deep cirques carved by ancient glaciation.

The mountain is part of the Brothers of Kintail group located near the neighboring Five Sisters of Kintail range. This geographic positioning has shaped the region as a distinct mountainous landscape within the Highlands.

The name comes from Gaelic and means Middle Ridge, reflecting how the Scottish Highlands preserve their language through geography. Local naming traditions show the deep connection between people and the landscape they inhabit.

The mountain is reachable from the A87 road at Cluanie Inn, with multiple routes offering different difficulty levels. The southeast ridge provides a more direct path to the summit, while other approaches allow for a longer exploration of the surrounding terrain.

Despite lying only about 15 kilometers from the west coast at Loch Duich, all water flowing from this mountain drains toward the east coast. This unusual hydrology reveals how underground geological structures completely reverse what the surface geography might suggest.
