A' Chràlaig, Mountain summit in Northwest Highlands, Scotland.
A' Chràlaik is a mountain summit in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, rising to approximately 1120 meters above sea level. The peak is marked by steep grassy slopes and sharp ridges visible from several directions.
The mountain became known during the 19th century and was associated with deer management through hunter trails across the Scottish Highlands. These paths eventually developed into hiking routes that remain in use today.
The name comes from Scottish Gaelic and refers to the basket-like shape visible in the mountain's form. Visitors notice this distinctive silhouette especially clearly when approaching the summit from different directions.
The ascent follows an established hiking trail starting near Cluanie Inn on the A87 road, where parking is available at the trailhead. The route is accessible year-round, though winter conditions are more challenging and require extra preparation.
From the summit, ten interconnected peaks are visible, together forming the Cluanie Horseshoe ridge. On clear days, the more distant mountain chains of Glen Affric can also be seen, making this location an exceptional vantage point.
