Astro Storm, Steel roller coaster in Brean Leisure Park, Somerset, England
Astro Storm is a steel roller coaster at Brean Leisure Park in Somerset, England, where riders sit in individual cars of three across with T-bar restraints. The track runs entirely inside a darkened enclosure, and a single ride lasts just under 90 seconds.
The coaster opened in 2008 at Blackpool under the name Space Invader 2, where it was part of a different leisure attraction. In 2011 it was moved to Somerset, renamed, and has been running at Brean Leisure Park ever since.
The ride moves through a darkened tunnel filled with strobe lights, sirens, and space-themed decorations that give the feeling of flying through the cosmos. Children and adults tend to react very differently to the effects, making each trip through the track its own experience.
The ride starts quickly and takes place in near-total darkness, so anyone sensitive to sudden movement or flashing lights should think before boarding. Loose items should be secured or left behind before getting on, as there is no storage inside the cars.
The coaster was built by the German manufacturer Zierer, a company better known for family rides than for indoor coasters with lighting systems. The lighting setup is designed to monitor the full track and actively control the darkness rather than simply leaving it unlit.
