Na Gruagaichean

Na Gruagaichean, Mountain summit in Mamores range, Highland, Scotland

Na Gruagaichean is a mountain summit in the Mamores range standing at about 1,056 meters high with two distinct peaks joined by a ridge. The formation creates a clear two-pointed profile that walkers encounter as they move along the connecting crest.

The region at the base of this mountain was transformed in the early 1900s by the construction of an aluminum smelter near Kinlochleven, which drove economic change in the area. This industrial development shaped settlement patterns and how people moved through the landscape around this peak.

The name comes from Scottish Gaelic and means 'the maidens', rooted in local stories about hunters and supernatural encounters in this landscape. Visitors can sense this connection between the mountain and the folklore that still shapes how locals view the place.

The walk starts from Kinlochleven at sea level, where a clear track leads toward Mamore Lodge before the route becomes steeper. Visitors should expect changing weather conditions and slippery ground, especially after rain, so good footwear and layers are essential.

The two connected peaks mean that walkers experience two distinct summit moments on a single outing, each offering different views of the surrounding valleys. This dual-peak structure is what makes the ridge crossing between them a memorable part of the journey.
