Binnein Beag

Binnein Beag, Mountain summit in Highland, Scotland

Description

Binnein Beag is a mountain summit in the Scottish Highlands with a cone-shaped profile rising to 943 meters. It connects to the nearby Binnein Mòr through a mountain pass at 750 meters, forming a pair of peaks that appear as a single ridge when viewed from certain angles.

History

The peak was cataloged in 1891 by Scottish mountaineer Sir Hugh Munro as part of his systematic classification of all Scottish mountains above 3000 feet. This classification fundamentally changed how climbers approached Scottish peaks and created an enduring tradition of peak-bagging that continues today.

Culture

The name comes from Scottish Gaelic meaning 'Little Peak', a traditional way of naming mountains in the Highlands that locals still use today. Hikers often refer to it by this Gaelic name, keeping the historic language alive through everyday conversation.

Practical

Most hikers begin their climb from Kinlochleven village, with marked paths that become more demanding as you reach the rocky upper sections. Sturdy footwear and weather-protective clothing are essential since mountain conditions can change rapidly at higher elevations.

Did you know?

On clear days, the summit offers views toward Ben Alder to the east and the Grey Corries to the north, with the substantial mass of Binnein Mòr visible to the southwest. These sight lines reveal the peak's position within a larger mountain landscape and its relationship to distant neighbors.
