Gorbals, Residential district in Glasgow, Scotland
Gorbals is a residential district on the south bank of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland. The area combines recent housing blocks with scattered older structures along the riverfront.
The area began as Bridgend in the 13th century near a wooden bridge over the Clyde. The Elphinstone family transformed it into a separate settlement with limited self-government in the 17th century.
The name comes from 'Gorbals Cross,' a meeting point where local roads joined before the city expanded.
The district lies close to the city center and offers direct access through several bridges crossing the river. Pedestrians reach the north side within a few minutes.
In the early 20th century, around ten thousand Jewish residents lived here and founded their own schools and synagogues. This community shaped the district for several decades before most families moved to other neighborhoods.
