Sheffield City Airport & Heliport, Defunct airport in Sheffield Parkway, 1997-2008
Sheffield City Airport & Heliport was a small aviation facility in Sheffield that operated from 1997 to 2008 near the M1 motorway. The site had a single runway just over 1,000 meters long, a modest terminal building, and a control tower visible from outside the compound.
The airport opened in 1997 on reclaimed land from old steelworks and was taken over by Peel Airports after scheduled flights ended in 2002. The civil aviation authority withdrew its license in 2008, leading to official closure that April.
The location is easily reached from Sheffield Parkway and sits close to the M1 motorway for good road access. The site can be visited by foot or car, with daytime visits recommended to see any remaining structures clearly.
The facility was built on reclaimed land from old steelworks and waste tips that was meant to become a business park. The original control tower still stands within Sheffield Business Park as a silent reminder of the city's brief aviation chapter.
