Blackwater Reservoir

Blackwater Reservoir, reservoir in Highland, Scotland, UK, outflows to the River Leven

Blackwater Reservoir is a large body of water in the Scottish Highlands built to supply electricity. It stretches across the moorland with a nearly one-kilometer-long dam that channels water through underground pipes to a power station.

The site was built in the early 1900s when a company used water power to run an aluminum factory. The dam was constructed without heavy machinery, making it one of Scotland's last major projects completed entirely by hand labor.

The dam carries stories of how local life changed when the water project arrived. Visitors walking through can sense how the landscape and communities were shaped together by water and human effort.

The best access is from Kinlochleven, where paths are clearly marked leading to the dam and around the water. The terrain can be uneven and slippery, so care is needed especially in wet weather or on loose rocks.

The dam was built entirely by hand without modern machinery, making it a rare example of this old construction method. Thousands of workers performed the physical labor, creating a monument to human endurance.
