Castell Dinas, Medieval castle ruins in Powys, Wales.
Castell Dinas is a castle ruin perched on a hillside near Talgarth in the Black Mountains at approximately 450 meters elevation. The remains show stone walls and defensive structures from the original Norman fortification.
Norman builders constructed the original castle between 1070 and 1075, possibly under the direction of William Fitz Osbern or Roger de Breteuil. The fortification later faced conflict with Welsh princes and was captured in 1233.
The site represents both Norman military architecture and Welsh resistance, as evidenced by its capture during conflicts with Welsh princes in 1233.
The ruins are accessible via hiking trails that lead visitors through the ancient defensive structures. The mountain setting requires sturdy footwear and is best visited during good weather.
At 450 meters elevation, this fortification holds the record as the highest castle location in England and Wales.
