Dome of Discovery, Exhibition hall at South Bank, United Kingdom.
The Dome of Discovery was an exhibition hall at South Bank in London with a diameter of 111 meters (364 feet) and a height of 28 meters (92 feet). The aluminum structure housed multiple exhibition galleries across several levels showcasing scientific and technological displays.
The structure was designed by architect Ralph Tubbs in 1951 for the Festival of Britain to showcase scientific progress of the era. It was built as a temporary installation from the start and was dismantled after the festival concluded.
The exhibition spaces presented multiple thematic areas that invited visitors to explore scientific concepts and ideas. The arrangement of displays reflected a holistic view of nature and human knowledge.
A long escalator system transported visitors to the different exhibition levels throughout the structure. The arrangement of spaces allowed for a smooth flow through the various thematic sections.
After the festival ended, the aluminum materials from the structure were dismantled and repurposed into decorative paper knives. This unexpected transformation showed how even temporary installations could leave lasting impressions.
