Flower's Barrow, Iron Age hillfort in Dorset, England
Flower's Barrow is an Iron Age fortification on a clifftop in Dorset with multiple concentric ramparts and ditches. The structure extends along the coast and encloses a central settlement area with clearly visible defensive rings.
The fortification was built about 2500 years ago and was later occupied by Roman forces who modified the structure. This Roman phase left additional defensive features that remain visible today.
The name comes from a family that once lived in this region, and the fortification still shows traces of their presence today. Visitors can explore the different levels of the site and see how people organized their settlement here.
Access to this site requires a 30-minute walk from Tyneham Village, and the route depends on when the nearby Lulworth Military Range is open to visitors. You should check opening times beforehand and wear suitable shoes for the walk.
Excavations in 1939 uncovered Iron Age pottery, sling stones, and bone fragments, particularly near the western entrance. These finds help researchers understand the daily lives of earlier inhabitants.
