Lawson Park, Artists residency and garden in Coniston, England
Lawson Park is an artists' residency with gardens in Coniston village, covering 15 acres of land that includes orchards, wildflower meadows, and views towards Coniston Water. The spaces are designed by Karen Guthrie and feature different working areas.
The farm dates from the 13th century, when Cistercian Furness Abbey used it as a base for charcoal production. It later came under the ownership of Victorian scholar John Ruskin.
This is home to Grizedale Arts, which provides live-work spaces for contemporary artists and regularly hosts conferences and gatherings. The working residencies shape how the property functions as a hub for creative practice.
The gardens are open to the public during the summer months, mainly through the National Garden Scheme program. Check ahead for seasonal opening dates before planning your visit.
A 2009 renovation transformed this remote hill farm into an award-winning facility, with specialized areas such as a dedicated orchard section and polytunnel structures. This redesign shows how rural buildings can be adapted for contemporary creative work.
