Lissan House, Country house in Cookstown, Northern Ireland.
Lissan House is a country house set on a 267-acre estate at the foot of the Sperrin Mountains near Cookstown. The grounds contain ancient woodlands and are crossed by the Lissan Water, while the building itself was constructed in the 18th century in Georgian style.
The house was built in the 18th century in Georgian architecture and remained in the Staples family for nearly 400 years. In 2006, Hazel Dolling gave the estate to the community.
The Staples family maintained deep roots in the local community, and visitors can see traces of generations of connection throughout the rooms. The way the house is furnished reveals the daily routines and social structures that defined these estates.
Visits can be arranged by appointment, and the estate has a tea room for refreshments before or after your time there. Multiple walking paths cross the grounds and suit different abilities, plus there is an adventure playground for children.
The house preserves the original furnishings of the family, offering a rare look at the material conditions of the time. The shift from private family home to publicly accessible space gives this place a distinctive character.
