Moorbank Botanic Gardens, Botanical garden in Newcastle upon Tyne, England
Moorbank Botanic Gardens is a three-hectare site in Newcastle containing multiple glasshouses filled with tropical and desert plants maintained at varying temperatures. The structures create separate zones that replicate the climate conditions each plant collection requires to thrive.
The garden was established in 1923 and underwent major expansion in 1980 when it received a large plant collection transferred from Corbridge. This influx significantly increased the range of species on display and the garden's research potential.
The site has served as a teaching space where students encounter plants from different climates and learn how they grow in controlled environments.
The site sits on Claremont Road and welcomes visitors during scheduled open times. Group visits can be arranged in advance for a more guided experience.
The garden maintains dedicated sections for medicinal plants, rhododendrons, and potentilla that demonstrate how botany connects to health and scientific study. These collections let visitors see the practical value of plants beyond simple ornament.
