Popping Stone, Natural sandstone formation in Irthing Gorge, Gilsland, United Kingdom.
The Popping Stone comprises three rounded sandstone boulders situated in a secluded meadow beside the River Irthing in Gilsland. The largest stone extends approximately 2.7 meters (8 feet 10 inches) in length and rises about 1.3 meters (4 feet 3 inches) in height.
Originally a single large stone documented in photographs before 1870, it was later divided into the current arrangement of three separate blocks. This transformation occurred during the Victorian period as the site developed into a destination for visitors.
The site holds meaning for those interested in romantic history and literature, drawing visitors who appreciate such personal connections to places. It remains a quiet location where people pause to consider the relationship between landscape and human emotion.
The site is located at the northern end of a riverside path and is reached through the grounds of Gilsland Spa Hotel. Visitors should be aware that access passes through private property and local guidelines should be respected.
The surface of the stones displays peck marks and tool impressions showing deliberate shaping with hammers. These marks date from the Victorian period when visitors and locals intentionally modified the natural formation.
