Stinchar Falls, Waterfall in South Ayrshire, Scotland

Stinchar Falls is a waterfall in South Ayrshire, Scotland, where the River Stinchar rushes through a narrow rocky channel and drops into deep pools below. The site sits within thick woodland of pine and broadleaf trees, with mossy rocks lining the banks on both sides.

The rocks at the falls are many millions of years old, formed on an ancient seabed and later pushed upward by mountain-building forces. Over thousands of years, the River Stinchar has slowly worn through these layers of sandstone and mudstone, cutting the gorge and pools that exist today.

The falls have been a gathering spot for local families for generations, with stories of paddling in the pools and sitting on the rocks to watch the water. Birdwatchers also come regularly, looking for dippers and kingfishers that hunt along the river.

The starting point for most visitors is the car park at Stinchar Bridge on the B741 road between Straiton and Newton Stewart. The trail to the falls is marked and passes through woodland, with some short uneven sections, so sturdy footwear is recommended especially after rain.

The volume of water at the falls changes so dramatically with rainfall that a visit after a storm feels like a completely different place from a dry summer day. A viewing platform along the trail gives a direct look into the gorge without needing to step near the slippery rock edges.
