Summerlee, Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, Industrial heritage museum in Coatbridge, Scotland.
Summerlee is a museum dedicated to Scottish industrial heritage set on the grounds of the former Summerlee Iron Works in Coatbridge. Multiple exhibition halls spread across 22 acres display machinery, tools, and equipment from Scotland's manufacturing era.
The site was home to Summerlee Iron Works, which operated from 1836 to 1926 and was central to Scottish manufacturing. This foundry shaped industrial development in the Lanarkshire region for nearly a century.
Miners Row recreates homes from different decades between 1880 and 1980, showing how industrial workers and their families actually lived in this region. The modest rooms reveal the daily routines and conditions people experienced during those times.
The museum sits on a large, well-organized site that is easy to navigate, with main buildings and exhibits clearly marked. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as there is considerable walking across different areas of the grounds.
The site operates Scotland's only functioning heritage tramway, running since 1988 with restored historic trams. Visitors can ride on these preserved cars, including models from 1904 and 1908, which travel through the grounds.
