Terpersie Castle, Tower house in Tullynessle, Scotland.
Terpersie Castle is a tower house in Tullynessle with a rectangular main block measuring about 28 feet by 18 feet (8.5 m by 5.5 m). Round towers stand at two diagonal opposite corners, giving the structure its distinctive Z-shaped form.
William Gordon built the castle in 1561 as a defensive stronghold for his family. During the 1745 Rising, an officer from Gordon of Glenbuchat's Regiment was captured within its walls.
The castle displays early Scottish defensive design through its Z-shaped layout with gun loops and strategically positioned corner towers. This building style was typical of fortifications meant to protect inhabitants from attack.
The castle underwent complete restoration between 1983 and 1989 and now functions as a private residence. Visitors should know that the property is privately owned and not available for tours or visits.
Each floor of the main building contains only a single room, while the adjoining round towers house larger service areas and additional chambers. This unusual room arrangement makes the castle an interesting example of medieval residential design.
