Castle Forbes, Medieval castle in Keig, Scotland
Castle Forbes is a castle in Aberdeenshire, set on a private estate in the Vale of Alford. The building looks out over the River Don, with fields and woodlands stretching around it on all sides.
The current building was constructed in 1815, replacing earlier structures on land the Forbes family has held since 1411. That long connection makes the estate one of the oldest family seats in Scotland.
The castle serves as the seat of the Forbes Clan Chief and reflects the enduring importance of this family in the region. Visitors can observe the connection between the building and local identity.
The castle sits along the B992 road, reached from the A944 between Aberdeen and Alford. The estate is private, so access is generally not open to visitors.
On the estate, there is a stone circle dating to around 3000 BC that now serves as a natural burial ground. Only memorial stones sourced locally are allowed there, tying the ancient site to everyday life today.
