Conglog Slate Quarry, Slate quarry in Tanygrisiau, Wales
Conglog Slate Quarry is a slate extraction site located northwest of Tanygrisiau that contains multiple geological layers of workable stone. The operation relied on an inclined rail system powered by gravity and water to move slate downhill and to processing areas.
The quarry began operations in 1854 following permission granted by landowner William Ormsby-Gore and continued extracting slate until 1910. The site's active decades coincided with the growth of the broader slate industry across North Wales.
The quarry was central to Welsh slate production, a trade that shaped entire communities and provided livelihoods for countless families in the region. The structures and workings visible today reflect how laborers interacted with the stone and prepared materials for distant markets.
The site is accessible to visitors interested in exploring industrial remains, though the working infrastructure is long gone. When visiting, be prepared for uneven ground, open workings, and undeveloped areas, as the location offers no modern safety features or visitor facilities.
The quarry negotiated agreements with nearby Rhosydd operations regarding shared land use between the two competing extraction sites. These neighboring relationships offer insight into the practical challenges miners faced when working adjacent to other operations in the same valley.
