Nidderdale Caves, Natural cave system in North Yorkshire, England.

Nidderdale Caves is a cave system in North Yorkshire made up of connected underground passages and limestone chambers at different levels. The passages alternate between horizontal sections and vertical drops, forming a branching network within the surrounding bedrock.

The cave system formed over thousands of years as water worked its way through layers of limestone, carving out passages and chambers. The site was later recognized as a protected area of scientific importance because of its geological value.

The caves draw people who are drawn to geology and underground exploration, and guided groups visit regularly throughout the year. The water-carved passages show clearly how limestone changes shape over long periods, something you can see directly on the walls and ceilings.

Access to the caves requires guidance from trained instructors, as conditions underground can change quickly depending on the weather. Water levels rise after heavy rainfall, which determines which passages are open at any given time.

Some sections of the network are completely flooded and can only be entered by trained cave divers. These submerged passages are among the least explored parts of the whole system, and much of what lies beyond them remains unknown.
