Slieve Meelbeg

Slieve Meelbeg is a mountain summit in the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland, accessible via steep rocky paths and exposed slopes. The climb passes through open moorland with views across the surrounding peaks.

The mountain incorporates sections of the Mourne Wall, a granite structure built between 1904 and 1922 to protect the Silent Valley Reservoir. Portions of this historic wall remain visible along the summit.

The name comes from Irish Sliabh Míol Beag, reflecting ancient Gaelic traditions in how this region's mountains were named. You can see this language history reflected throughout the landscape today.

The Ott Track offers an established starting point with parking and connects to paths leading to neighboring peaks. The ground is uneven and rocky, so sturdy hiking boots are essential.

The summit forms part of a circular route that also includes Slieve Meelmore, allowing hikers to conquer two of the seven highest Mourne peaks in one day. This combination offers an intense mountain experience without separate journeys.
