Kaaterskill Falls, Two-tiered waterfall in Catskill Mountains, New York, United States.

Kaaterskill Falls is a two-tiered waterfall in Greene County within the Catskill Mountains of New York state. Water drops first 175 feet (53 meters) over the upper ledge, collects in a shallow basin, then plunges another 210 feet (64 meters) down into the valley below.

A dam reshaped the upper falls in the 19th century to store and control water for a nearby tannery. After the industry closed, workers removed the dam in 1852, allowing water to flow naturally over the rocks again.

The name comes from the Dutch word for wildcat creek, referring to the bobcats that once roamed these wooded slopes. Hikers today still see the steep rock walls and the narrow path that threads between the two falls.

The trail starts at the end of Laurel House Road and winds through dense forest before reaching the lower viewing area. Visitors who climb to the upper platform should wear sturdy shoes, as the steps can become slippery when wet.

Painters of the Hudson River School depicted this location frequently in the 19th century, making it one of the most recognized waterfalls in America. Thomas Cole created several canvases showing the gorge and the drops in changing light.
