North Mountain, Mountain summit in Catskill Mountains, New York, US.
North Mountain rises to about 3,200 feet in the Catskill Mountains and features rocky outcrops amid dense forests with several observation points. The terrain shifts between wooded sections and more open areas that reveal different landscapes as you climb.
The mountain became a popular destination in the 19th century after the Catskill Mountain House opened nearby. This early tourism boom drew artists and visitors from the eastern United States to the region.
The mountain's views inspired Hudson River School painters who created works capturing its landscapes. Visitors today often recognize these same vistas from 19th-century paintings they have seen.
The hike follows a marked trail that spans roughly 10 kilometers round trip with steady elevation gain throughout. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, as the weather is more stable and the trails are better maintained.
The summit hosts a forest of red spruce and balsam fir trees that creates a rare northern plant zone in this region. This type of forest ecosystem is normally found only at much higher elevations or further north in the country.
