Fort Ritchie, Military base in Washington County, United States.
Fort Ritchie is a former military installation in Washington County covering about one square mile of forested terrain. The site features two lakes and numerous stone structures that have been redeveloped into residential and mixed-use spaces.
The installation was established in 1942 as a military training center and operated until 1947, preparing around 20,000 intelligence personnel. The base gained special significance through the training of Jewish refugees who became known as the Ritchie Boys.
The site served as a training ground for intelligence specialists, many of whom later worked on war crimes documentation and participated in military tribunals. These soldiers brought multilingual skills and diverse perspectives to their work after deployment.
The site is partially open to the public today, with residential developments like Whistling Ridge now occupying the grounds. Visitors should note that parts of the location remain under development and some areas may have limited accessibility.
Before becoming a military site in 1942, the grounds operated as the Buena Vista Ice Company from 1889 to 1903. The facility harvested natural ice from the lakes and supplied it to nearby urban areas during winter months.
