Baytown, Industrial city in Harris County, Texas
Baytown is a city in Harris County and Chambers County located on Galveston Bay, where the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou flow through the area. The landscape consists of flat coastal terrain with industrial facilities, residential neighborhoods, and waterways that run through the city.
Three towns named Goose Creek, Pelly, and East Baytown merged in January 1948 to form the current city. Industrialization accelerated with the construction of large refineries in the decades that followed.
The Downtown Arts District features multiple performance venues, including the Baytown Little Theater, which presents six productions annually for local audiences.
The city is primarily designed for car travel, with wide roads leading to different neighborhoods. Most visitors plan their route along main thoroughfares that connect industrial sites, parks, or residential areas.
The Lynchburg Ferry crosses the San Jacinto River, connecting the city to La Porte since 1822. Nathaniel Lynch originally opened this crossing for settlers, and the service still operates free of charge today.
