Cathedral Caverns State Park
Cathedral Caverns State Park, National Natural Landmark show cave in Marshall County, United States.
Cathedral Caverns State Park is a show cave in Marshall County, Alabama, with an enormous entrance leading to passages that wind through the underground landscape. Concrete paths allow visitors to walk through different sections and see the rock formations that have developed over thousands of years.
The cave provided shelter to the Kennamer family during the Civil War when their home was destroyed in the surrounding area. This chapter in the site's past connects it to the region's experience during that conflict.
The cave system includes meaningful geological formations such as Goliath, a substantial stalagmite measuring 45 feet tall and 243 feet in circumference.
The cave stays at a steady temperature of about 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, so you can visit comfortably any time. The paved pathways inside make walking easy and accessible for most visitors.
Inside the cave, one rock formation rises at an unusual angle from floor to ceiling, defying what you would normally expect from gravity. This rare geological oddity shows how water and minerals have shaped stone in unexpected ways over thousands of years.
