Dancy-Polk House, Historic residence in Decatur, United States.
The Dancy-Polk House is a two-story residence at 901 Railroad Street featuring a prominent double-height front portico supported by eight Doric columns across its levels. The Early Classical Revival design creates a distinctive appearance that has been maintained from the 1800s onward.
The house was built in 1829 for Colonel William Francis Dancy as an Early Classical Revival mansion. It was one of only four structures to survive the Civil War in Decatur, though it sustained damage during the 1864 Battle for the city.
The house served as a boarding house starting in 1872, drawing travelers and local residents together under its roof. The rooms still reflect its role as a social hub where different people gathered and shared stories.
The property offers educational programs focused on historical preservation and regional history. Plan for interior spaces with period furnishings that show signs of age, and be aware that some areas have limited natural light.
A cannonball impact mark from the 1864 battle remains visible on one of the chestnut columns supporting the lower front porch. This dent in the wood serves as a direct witness to the fighting that swept through Decatur.
