Neversink Pit, Natural limestone sinkhole in Jackson County, United States.

Description

Neversink Pit is a natural limestone sinkhole in Jackson County, United States. The opening at the surface measures about 40 feet across and descends to a wider chamber below that has a diameter of roughly 100 feet.

History

The site was acquired by the Southeastern Cave Conservancy in 1995 and placed under protection. The organization has managed the limestone formation since then to preserve its geological features.

Practical

Visitors must obtain a permit from the Southeastern Cave Conservancy and have experience with vertical caving techniques. Exploration requires specialized equipment and should only be done by trained individuals.

Did you know?

After heavy rainfall, temporary waterfalls form along the limestone walls and cascade through the entire depth of the pit. This natural phenomenon gives the formation a different appearance with each weather event.
