Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument
Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, War memorial in downtown Indianapolis, United States.
The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is a war memorial in downtown Indianapolis built from limestone and bronze that rises over 86 meters high. A Victory statue crowns the top, while four military figures stand guard at the monument's corners.
German architect Bruno Schmitz designed this memorial in 1888 to honor Indiana veterans who had fought in multiple wars. The project emerged as a way to recognize the sacrifice and service of these soldiers in the state's history.
The monument sits at the heart of Indianapolis, where its circular plaza brings people together for celebrations, community gatherings, and remembrance events throughout the year. Locals and visitors use this space as a meeting point and focal place for shared reflection.
An elevator allows visitors to reach the observation platform at height, while a long staircase offers an alternative route for those who prefer to climb. The ascent requires physical effort, especially if you take the stairs instead of the elevator.
The stone used to build the monument came from a local quarry, giving it deep roots in the region. This choice of local materials connects the structure directly to Indiana's landscape and resources.
